How is Preventative Care Different Than Reactive Care?
Preventative care is one of the bedrock principles of holistic health in general, not just holistic dentistry. There is literally nothing better than stopping the bad stuff before it even begins. Preventative medicine is cheaper and healthier than playing whack-a-mole with health issues that could have been prevented in the first place.

Preventative care is something we preach to every one of our patients, even the ones that have quite a few issues. Our preventative care begins with a new patient exam for new patients and regular exams for existing patients. These exams will address any of your concerns and will give the dentist and hygienist a chance evaluate your total oral health. If there are issues, they will work out a treatment plan for those; but for your oral health, they will also create a preventative plan as well.

That preventative plan will take into account your current oral health so some people will be fine with hygiene cleanings every six months or so, others will need more aggressive treatments.
Catching an Issue Early is Always Best
Preventative care is also more than just stopping issues before they happen; it is also about preventing issues you do have from getting any worse. If left untreated, dental issues don't really go away till your tooth just falls out. We obviously don't want that! And this is why exams and getting annual x-rays is important. While you may not like coming in for x-rays or the exam, we just can't properly diagnose you without them.
When addressing an issue of decay, for instance, we take care in trying to save as much tooth structure as we can. For small cavities, we have had a lot of success with silver nitrate sedative fillings. But, if the decay has progressed too far, our options get more and more limited. Identifying problems early is something that you can help us out with too!

Preventative Care Starts With You
We can't make you call us to schedule an appointment. And we can't tell you whether that tooth that started hurting is an issue to you see us. I can't stress this too much: don't wait too long! As the person writing this, I can tell you that I waited too long to have Dr. Amelia work on my tooth, and it had to be extracted. And if you think that's bad, I work here; I'm here every day! So, I know how difficult it can be to get ahead of issues, but I would still have that tooth if I had been more proactive myself. Don't be like me! (Matt Ellingson).

Pay attention to your body and what your teeth are telling you. If you are overly sensitive out of the blue or you are having cold sensitivity, you really need to get that looked at as soon as possible. And if not with us, find somebody. Save your teeth; save your health!
