What Does Biocompatible Mean?
"Biocompatible" has a few different definitions, but this one seems like the best to us: "the ability of a biomaterial to perform its desired function with respect to a medical therapy, without eliciting any undesirable local or systemic effects in the recipient or beneficiary of that therapy, but generating the most appropriate beneficial cellular or tissue response in that specific situation, and optimizing the clinically relevant performance of that therapy"

Phew! That's a lot. Breaking it down, the definitions is saying that the material used that comes into contact with your body is 'biocompatible' if it doesn't cause any harm where the material comes into contact nor any harm in the rest of your body either.

How Do We Know Which Materials are Biocompatible?
The old tried and true, testing and experience. And no, we here at Swiss Biologic aren't testing things out on you; we're using materials that have been extensively tested in labs and experiments and have been approved for release to the public through FDA clearance. We also pay attention as to whether a material has not been approved with the European Medicines Agency, Europe's counterpart to the FDA.
We'd like to believe that the FDA is doing a thorough testing process; but, we know the Europeans in fact are.

We also know what works and what doesn't due to experience. It is still the policy of the ADA that amalgam fillings are safe. We believe there are better options than those. Nickel was believed to be safe; but, a sizeable number of people have allergic reactions to it. Titanium was believed to be completely biocompatible; but we now know that titanium ions in the blood stream can accumulate over time and have negative effects on your heart and brain health.

The only material we know of right now that has essentially zero allergic reactions to it, looks close to natural teeth, and is strong enough to support years of use, are dental ceramics. Will something even better come along? It's likely, but the future is not now, and if you need dental work, you need what is available now. Ceramics have been used in the body and in dental work for over 30 years, which is ample time for allergic and negative reactions to manifest themselves. There have been practically zero negative effects. The major issues with ceramics in the past was there durability. Most of those issues have been resolved, at least with dental implants, by utilizing better designed implants and using ceramic material matrices that allow for more flexibility and compression.

So Which Biocompatible Materials Do You Use?
Our go to material is ceramics. For our implants, implant abutments, implant gingival formers, crowns, onlays, and fillings, it's ceramics. We also use a series of ceramic based polymers when doing our fillings. The ceramic is polymerized because it must be workable to fit your filling space. While it may be possible to fit an onlay into an area for a filling, the contact are may not be enough to hold the onlay in place long term, and the cost would be multiple times over what a simple filling would cost.
Where appropriate, we also use materials from your own body. Your ability to heal and regenerate bone works best when we use your own bone for bone grafting and blood for PRF injections. Other offices use cadaver or porcine bone, but try to forgo those if at all possible.

Certain other cements and numbing agents are a bit more standard in their make-up, but we still make sure that there is no added mercury, fluoride, or anything else that crosses one of our red-lines. Nothing is perfect, but we work to give you the best option available!

Post-Op Supplements?
After certain procedures like a tooth extraction or implant placement, we have supplement kits that are used to help your body heal. We use a mix of holistic and natural supplements like Vitamin K2 and D3 as well as Arnica and Liposomal Vitamin C. All of these supplements will aid you in healing but are also picked for their high absorbability and tolerance.
